Baby names by nakshatra

In many families a child's name begins with the syllable of the nakshatra pada the Moon was in at birth. Each of the 27 nakshatras has four padas, and each pada its own syllable. Choose the syllable to see the names that begin with it.

Every name here carries the dictionary entry its meaning was read from, and a grade: attested, compound, regional or a modern coinage. Where a name is not a Sanskrit word, the page says so, and where the dictionary's sense of it is unflattering, it says that too. 6,037 names in all.

What the grades mean
attested
The name is a word in Monier-Williams' Sanskrit dictionary, and the meaning is the dictionary's own.
compound
Two dictionary words joined; the meaning gives both halves.
regional
Not a Sanskrit word as it is written, but long given in Indian families: it is in the Indian electoral rolls. A Tamil or Malayalam form of a Sanskrit name says so, and takes that word's meaning.
modern coinage
Not a Sanskrit word and not in the rolls: a recent name, seen in US or UK birth registers.

MW is Monier-Williams, A Sanskrit-English Dictionary (1899), by page and column; Apte is The Practical Sanskrit-English Dictionary (1890), by page. Where a name is not a Sanskrit word, its Devanagari is worked out from the English spelling.
